It is hard for persons to accept that Jesus alone would bear the sins of the world. Some doubt His power to do so. Others just think it is unfair.
Jesus declares…All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (Matthew 28; 18). With such power, what can He not do?
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29). This announcement is not a jest or some fancy poetic verbiage designed for pomp and pageantry. It is a revelation of eternal truth which stirs the souls and worms the hearts of those that are to be saved. For the lost, it is meaningless jabber. Nothing more than a metaphoric expression that has no worth when viewed in the light of the world’s reality evident around us every day.
The power which Jesus holds and wields stems from who he is:
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.(Isaiah 9:6)
Jesus is Emmanuel (God with Us), God incarnate (God in the flesh) fully God, fully man. This makes Him uniquely qualified to forgive sins, cover sin, wash sin, propitiate for sin and ultimately destroy sin.
Only He could do it..
For this reason Jesus is the only one that could bear the cross for it to hold any significance as it relates to man’s eternal salvation. in this regard therefore yes, Jesus of necessity had to bear the cross alone in order that sin infested man can be saved from sin and the doom associated with it.
With this truth in mind therefore, when Jesus exclaimed “take up your cross and follow me” He was not implying that those who follow Him would be put to death in similar manner or that those who follow him must also bear the sins of the world. His cry however would suggest that as we believe in him and seek to help others to believe we will experience opposition, persecution, ridicule and such like. We would also be called upon to give up even some of our God-given rights and privileges so that the gospel of Jesus Christ can be propagated and ultimately that God will be glorified in and through us.
Amazingly enough as we consider these things as the crosses that we must bear we are admonished to cast our cares on Him (Jesus) for he cares for us. Oh what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear…. Jesus Himself also said ” come unto me ….I will give you rest…”
Ultimately the cross that bought the world’s freedom from sin could only be borne by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of man. Let us not diminish His power nor His sacrifice by thinking that we can render any assistance in the purchase of our salvation. We ought to thankfully acknowledge His gift to us and worship Him accordingly, knowing that all praise and all glory belongs to Him. Thank you Jesus!
Must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free? Yes…this is the design of our heavenly father and we thankfully and joyfully believe and accept that we are saved through sacrifice of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
